A Rose in the Desert by Chi Emerole

This story is a beautiful story on making the most out of where you are.  A very uplifting book for children to see that they can be a positive influence even when in a not so positive place.  A young girl , Rose, age seven makes the most of her birthday as she must spend it in a refugee camp.  The reader gets a glimpse of how other children their age live and celebrate birthdays.  The pictures in this book are just as awesome as the story message itself, even my teen daughter commented on the cool illustrations while flipping through the book.  So what exactly is the book message? 

Chi Emerole's A Rose in the Desert shows children the importance of maintaining a positive view on life, regardless of its circumstances.

Chi Emerole was the youngest of six children born to two Nigerian teachers in a small village she and her siblings fondly called "Ogele City." She came to the United States at the age of 19. She is a pediatrician and a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. She is passionate about poetry, creative writing, travelling and improving the lives of children. Emerole lives in Atlanta with her husband and son.
